Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Laser-assisted Liposuction
Smartlipo triplex is a minimally invasive surgical procedure. The procedure disrupts the fat cells through a thermal and photo-disruptive action – heating and shattering the fat cell membrane. The laser coagulates the underlying vessels due to the hemostatic properties of the laser, resulting in less bleeding, bruising, trauma as well as less down time. As an added benefit, the system also promotes tissue tightening through bulk thermal heating and tissue coagulation. The Smartlipo has been cleared by the FDA for laser-assisted lipolysis.
For most patients, typically only one treatment is required. The session may last from 60-90 minutes for each area that is treated. Laser lipolysis is also an ideal choice for “touch ups” and revisions.
Smartlipo is ideal for contouring the abdomen, flanks, thighs, saddlebags, arms, knees, back, bra bulge, and areas of loose or flabby skin.
After the anesthesia has worn off, you may feel the aches and pains that follow a vigorous workout. This is unlike in traditional liposuction where a patient feels as if they were run over by a truck. After the treatment, you will have some bruising and / or swelling. We recommend two days of rest following the procedure. You will wear a compression garment for two to three weeks depending on the area that was treated. You can begin exercising two weeks post procedure.
Results can be seen immediately with continued improvement over the next six months.
Yes! The Smartlipo procedure destroys and removes the treated fat cells. Adults do not create new fat cells. When a person gains weight, that person’s fat cells simply expand. Should you gain weight, that fat will most likely be deposited in areas where the procedure was not performed.
Ideal candidates are in good health, close to normal body weight and have realistic expectations for the results. If the person has areas of fat that will not respond to diet and exercise, then that person is a candidate for laser-assisted lipolysis.
Patients are not candidates for Smartlipo if they are pregnant or breast feeding, have insulin dependent diabetes; active or chronic liver disease or hepatitis; coronary artery disease; unstable hypertension; bleeding disorders; or are on Coumadin / Heparin. Those patients with immune related disorders such as HIV or who are allergic to Lidocaine are also not candidates.
