Kybella is the only FDA approved injectable drug that effectively shrinks submental fat, also known as a “double chin”.
What is Kybella and how does it work?
Kybella is a naturally occurring molecule in the body, deoxycholic acid, that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into subcutaneous fat, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. Once fat cells are destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.
What happens during a Kybella treatment?
KYBELLA™ is a 15 to 20 minute in-office treatment. The submental area is cleaned and prepped. The treatment area is anesthetized with ice which will make the Kybella injections very tolerable. Dr. Kruy injects Kybella into 10 to 20 sites and then over time Kybella will work to destroy the fat cells. The amount of injections and number of treatments will be determined by each individual’s amount of submental fullness. Typically 2 to 6 treatments will be necessary for best results.
When will I see results?
It takes a minimum of two treatments to see any results. Treatments are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Most patients will notice results within 3 months of their third or fourth treatments, although up to six treatments may be necessary. It is possible that you will not see improvement despite multiple treatments due to your underlying anatomy or other factors.
How long does the correction with Kybella last?
The results are long-lasting, as after each treatment fat is destroyed and does not reappear. Re-treatment is not expected.
What are the possible side effects of treatment with Kybella?
Immediately after your Kybella treatment you will experience mild swelling and redness, and possible bruising. The most common side effect is swelling, and although the swelling will be most dramatic in the first 3 days after the procedure it will gradually subside in a few days to a few weeks. Other potential side effects of bruising, discomfort or tenderness to the area, numbness, and tingling were common during FDA trials, but usually lasted only a few days to a few weeks and most were mild. None of the side effects were long lasting.
