What Causes Stretch Marks?

Most people are familiar with stretch marks, those lines or streaks that appear parallel to each other across the skin and come in various colors. Usually, they are red, pink, purple, gray or white. They can have a raised appearance or present as indentations in the skin. These marks are harmless and usually fade with time. However, you may have wondered what causes them.

Risk Factors

While there is no way to know for sure if a person will develop stretch marks, there are a number of factors that are commonly seen in those who do develop them. Women generally tend to develop stretch marks more often than men. In particular, pregnant women are prone to them, as their skin increases significantly in size over a relatively short period of time.

Similarly, weight plays a role in the presence of these marks. Overweight individuals and those who have seen a large weight gain or loss may find themselves with stretch marks. Skin tone is another indication. Caucasians with pale skin get them more than individuals with darker complexions. If you use corticosteroid medicine or have a family history of stretch marks, you may find yourself with them as well.

Causes

The causes of stretch marks are varied. As the name implies, the stretching of skin is a main cause of these skin conditions. In addition, increases of the naturally occurring hormone cortisone can lead to these marks because it decreases skin’s elasticity. Cortisone is produced by the adrenal glands, so medical conditions that affect these glands can increase stretch marks. Some of these conditions include Cushing’s disease and Marfan syndrome. Anything that affects the elasticity of skin or that stretches it rapidly is likely to cause them.

Treatments

There is currently no available treatment that will get rid of your stretch marks completely. However, they do usually fade gradually with time. In addition, there are some ways you can see an improvement in their appearance. Laser treatments can be used as a way to increase skin’s collagen in order to decrease the prominence of stretch marks.
